ACFAOM is an education, research and advocacy organization, which does the following:

Promotes understanding of the valuable services rendered by podiatrists who devote most of their practice to podiatric orthopedics and primary podiatric medicine;

Endeavors to advance standards of practice and quality of podiatric care;

Works to promote establishment of residencies and to encourage certification in podiatric orthopedics and medicine;

Seeks to standardize nomenclature, teaching methods, and approaches to diagnosis and treatment;

Promotes and encourages publication of research findings; and

Serves as the "educational arm" of the advanced medical and orthopedic aspect of the podiatric profession.


ACFAOM is a national organization of highly educated and trained podiatric physicians dedicated to assuring that primary podiatric medicine, broadly defined as orthopedics and medicine of the lower extremities, is the cornerstone of contemporary podiatric practice.


ACFAOM was founded in the late 1940s as the American College of Foot Orthopedists, and incorporated in 1951 as an Illinois non-profit corporation. With approximately 900 members, ACFAOM is the largest affiliated organization of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) and represents the medical, orthopedic and biomechanical aspects of practice. It is the only current Specialty Organization affiliated with APMA. .

The Board of Directors is elected by the membership. Directors serve three-year terms with a maximum length of service of nine years. The Board of Directors elects Officers from among its number.
