The average person will walk over 80,000 miles in a lifetime (there are about 1800 foot strikes for every mile walked).
More than 75% of all Americans will experience foot problems in their lifetime.
The hinge between the foot and leg is known as the ankle.
Structures related to the top of the foot are referred to as dorsal and those on the bottom of the foot are referred to as plantar.
The front side of the body is called the anterior and the back side of the body is the posterior.
The skin on top (dorsum)of the foot is very thin and pliable. It contains hair follicles and has very little underlying fat.
In contrast, the skin on the bottom of the foot (plantar), is very thick, thus serving as a protection.
The plantar skin will thicken in response to abnormal pressure and/or friction leading to the formation of calluses.
